15 Easy Steps to Lead a Greener Lifestyle.
I was recently approached by someone who asked for some advise on how to lead a cleaner, greener lifestyle – if you follow our Instagram stories you’ll be familiar with our updates on slower more sustainable living. It wasn’t the first time and will no doubt be the last time somebody asks, so I thought it could be a good resource to share my thoughts here…
Here are our 15 easy steps to lead a greener life:
Plastic:
1) General mindfulness of the amount of plastic you purchase, even being aware is a great way to start noting the amount of plastic you take into your home and a great way to acknowledge the priority areas in your lifestyle. Tackle one area at a time.
2) Could you buy your fruit and vegetables plastic free from your local green grocer (and support a local business – bonus!)? These can often be cheaper than your local super market! Or if you’re a keen gardener and have the space, grow your own! We have another post coming up for tips on this.
3) Do you really need fancy shower gels and shampoos? Using soap, shampoo and deodorant bars are great plastic free alternatives!
4) Do you use a plastic toothbrush? How about using a bamboo alternative instead?
One Use:
5) Could you buy a reusable coffee cup, water bottle or shopping bag?
6) Could you you ditch a plastic straw for a paper one, or better still ditch them entirely?
7) We frequently use cotton wool pads for removing make up, could you replace this for reusable face pads? Or use a washable facecloth instead of face wipes?
8) Do you wrap your food in cling film? Try bees wax wrap sheets instead! You can wipe them clean and use them over and over again!
9) Ditch your kitchen paper towels for a washable cloth instead.
Spend:
Taking care with where you spend your money has huge impact on the world you want to build for the future. So spend those pounds well.
10) Choose to shop with companies that demonstrate the same values that you have. Shop kinder.
11) Support your independents to encourage a thriving and sustainable local economy.
12) Avoid fast fashion. Buy less so you can buy better.
Travel:
13) Do you really need to take the car? How about public transport? Or if it’s not far walk (and bonus it’s really good for you!)
14) Supermarkets often air large volumes of international foods into the country for speed in a bid keep food fresh. This large scale airing encourages carbon emissions which negatively impacts the environment. Instead try buying local and seasonal produce that don’t need to be transported quite so far.
Final Thought:
15) You’re not perfect and can’t be expected to be. Practise makes perfect and you can add new things in to minimise your impact over time.
